I get it. Adulting is expensive. Travel is expensive. Mixing the two together is sometimes really hard. However. I am a firm believer in traveling with your spouse. My husband and I weren't able to get away without children until our 8th wedding anniversary, I think? But Oh. My. Gosh. It was a game changer! It was so fun to just hang out with my favorite person. To play and have fun. And most importantly, remember WHY I fell in love with him (and confirm that my feelings absolutely had not changed).
Fast forward several more years, and now we prioritize traveling without our kids at least once a year. More if we can swing it. Last year, we made our first trip together down to Riviera Maya, Mexico (south of Cancun) and we stayed at Catalonia Royal Tulum. I was a little nervous just because the price was SO GOOD and I hadn't really seen any other travel advisors comment about it. There was no reason to be nervous...the resort was amazing!
I will say there are no ocean view or ocean front rooms at this resort. It sits squarely in the middle of the jungle. However, a quick 5 minute walk through the resort and you are standing on amazing beach, with plenty of chair for everyone. We never had to bribe servers to save us seats, get up super early to save seats or ever go without.

We upgraded our room to a Privileged Romance room, which included unlimited access to the Privileged restaurant, BLoved, access to the Privileged area of the beach, a private dinner on the beach and a complimentary 30 minute couples massage.

We spent 5 nights at Catalonia Royal Tulum. We enjoyed spending time on the beach, at the pool and at eating at ALL the places. It was super easy to go on an excursion. One night they had a Mexican Fiesta with food, games and plenty of booze. Our last night we had dinner at Rauxa, which is a very intimate dinner theatre. The show during dinner was great!
So. How much did we spend? For the upgraded room, we spent less than $1500. Keep in mind that this is an all-inclusive resort, so all of the food, drinks, entertainment, etc. are included. We also had the private dinner on the beach and the couples massage that were included as well. Do you have to upgrade? Absolutely not! And that will save you a few hundred dollars. However, it is totally worth spending a bit more for the upgrade!
